tHE mICHAEL pOLANYI cOLLEGEWe are an Applied Liberal Arts Program. This means that we have incorporated certain elements and fields of study to the traditional Liberal Arts and Classical Books studies. We not only focus on the Trivium and Quadrivium, but also include Praxeology, Philosohpy, Theology and Entrepreneurship to our Curriculum.
Our objective is to create a community of independent and responsible learners, self-reliant and self-governed individuals who embody the values and principles of free men (and women). We seek to understand the unity of knowledge and to be able to see and discover patterns in history, human behavior and innovation and creativity. Our main challenge is to unlearn what we have been taught all our lives. Our bad habits, our conditioning and our mediocre standards. Most people around us, outside the MPC, don't really understand what we are trying to do, and, although they feel something is not quite right with their education and their life expectations, I don't think they know how to change it. Our true goal is to change education in Guatemala, and the worl,d and, through this, change the course of history. This part of the website is divided in six parts: |
The Handbook
These are the outlines we created for ourselves, our rubrics, our curriculum, our norming and our goals. This will be completed little by little and, by the end of our third year it may (or may not) be finished and ready to be used by future generations. |
What We Learn
Here I include the list of books we encountered during our first semester in the MPC, the articles we read and discussed, the curriculum, the project based learning we pursue, interesting quotes I ponder and wonder about, and (last but not least) the metaquestions and (not so meta) questions that arise during my journey to enlightenment. |
How We Learn
We do not receive classes like in traditional education systems, we do not have traditional teachers nor grades. Instead we have honest and genuine self-evaluations, we are our own teachers through collaborative work and dialogues. We do attend lectures though, and listen to experts (see my Visitors page to see who we’ve had over at the MPC Headquarters). |
Why We Learn
This is a Vlog where you will see my little epiphanies on why we are reading the books we are reading and engaging the material on our curriculum. |
Where We Learn
The Francisco Marroquin University is known internationally for its mission of teaching and diffussing the legal and economic principles of a society of responsible and free men and women. It is the setting for the Michael Polanyi College Pioneers and we hope that will be the bridge to replicate the model of the MPC Program to the rest of the world. |
Who Learns
Here you will find a brief profile of each one of the sixteen other MPC’ers and a link to their personal webpages. |
